The Challenge:

Since 2019, Site Solutions has partnered with one of the UK’s leading waste management companies. While we also specialise in waste management, our focus with this customer has been on tackling challenging types of bulk waste, complementing our partner’s zero-waste-to-landfill goal: “recycling the past for the future.”

Aligned in values, our team is driven to find the most sustainable solutions for recycling even the most complex or unusual waste materials.

Our client’s challenge involved managing bulk wood waste sustainably. Operating from nine locations across the UK, wood waste is consolidated and stored at one central site, where it accumulates to approximately 1,200 tonnes of shredded material awaiting collection.

Wood waste is graded from A – D:

Grade A: Clean and untreated. Pre consumer waste wood created during the manufacturing process

Grade B: Treated and non-hazardous.Industrial waste wood

Grade C: Treated and non-hazardous. Municipal waste wood

Grade D: Hazardous waste.

A solution was required to collect and repurpose bulk grade c wood.

The Solution:

Site Solutions carefully considered several factors to identify the best option. Grade C wood is ideally recycled for applications like mulch or as fuel. In this case, we prioritised minimizing the carbon footprint and adhered to plant regulations, including limits on accepted waste quantities.

While evaluating these aspects, the wood waste was safely stockpiled at a designated central location until we identified a suitable biofuel plant. Once the right facility was secured, we coordinated collection and transported the wood waste directly to the plant, where it was repurposed as biofuel.
